The northern coast is greener, fresher, and feels subtropical thanks to more frequent rainfall. This is where you’ll find palm trees, botanical gardens, parks, and streets full of flowers, which give the city a calm and pleasantly ordinary character. Puerto de la Cruz isn’t about giant resorts and endless white sand beaches, but rather about a slow pace, authentic city life, and proximity to nature.

As early as the 18th century, Puerto de la Cruz became one of the first tourist resorts in the Canary Islands, and even the famous writer Agatha Christie stayed here. The city has a long tradition of hospitality and still maintains the atmosphere of a place where locals meet travelers looking for a quieter and more authentic island experience.

A holiday in Puerto de la Cruz offers the ideal combination of swimming in the ocean, walking through the historic center, sitting in cafes, and discovering local sights. It’s a great place for those who want to explore the north of Tenerife, head to the Anaga Mountains or Teide National Park, or just enjoy days that aren’t overcrowded with tourists but still have everything you expect from a pleasant holiday.

Plaza del Charco

This shady square in the historic part of town is lined with cafes and restaurants. It’s called del Charco (“the puddle”) because it used to be flooded during storms. In its center is a fountain with a taro plant, laurels imported from Cuba in 1852, and several impressive palm trees. There’s a calm and relaxed atmosphere here. Parents will appreciate the relatively large playground, which is clearly visible from the restaurants. A beach is also located near the square. The square is lively and charming, especially in the evening hours.

San Telmo Promenade

An approximately 300-meter-long promenade. You’ll find many shops here where you can buy souvenirs, and restaurants where you can sit and watch the surrounding bustle. Previously, movement for wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility was difficult because the streets were paved and there were stairs in some sections. After the improvements, however, the promenade is much more accessible, wider, and offers a better view of the sea.

Playa de San Telmo

Right next to the San Telmo promenade is the small city beach Playa de San Telmo. Toilets and a bar with a pleasant outdoor terrace are available. The sea here is almost always rough, so the beach is not suitable for non-swimmers or children. Lifeguards are on site during the day, but they fly a red flag after their shift ends.

Ermita de San Telmo Chapel

Ermita San Telmo, Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife

A small Catholic chapel from the 18th century located at one end of the San Telmo promenade. It was built in 1620. Today it serves as a tourist information center and also houses the MACEW Museum of Contemporary Art. You can also buy arts and crafts here.

Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art

The Eduardo Westerdahl Museum of Contemporary Art (MACEW) was founded in 1953 by the prominent Canarian art critic Eduardo Westerdahl and is one of the very first modern art museums in Spain. It is housed in the beautiful historic Casa de la Aduana in Puerto de la Cruz and manages a collection of 20th-century art from 1934 onwards, including works by leading international, Spanish, and Canarian artists, such as Óscar Domínguez, César Manrique, and Manuel Millares.

Avenida De Cristóbal Colón

Avenida Cristóbal Colón is the main pedestrian coastal promenade in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. It is a lively recreational zone that runs along Martiánez Beach and the Lago Martiánez water park, and is full of restaurants, bars, shops, and hotels. It’s a safe area with a pleasant atmosphere. It’s an ideal place for walks, evening entertainment, and watching carnival events.

Playa Martiánez Beach

Playa Martiánez is an approximately 300-meter-long semi-circular black sand beach right in the center of Puerto de la Cruz. You’ll find it east of the cliff where the La Paz neighborhood is located. Thanks to the strong waves, it’s popular among water sports enthusiasts, and you’ll definitely see surfers in the water. Visitors complain about the rocky, not-so-pleasant entry into the sea. Because there is no lifeguard, this beach is not recommended for families with children. Just a few minutes from the beach is a shopping center, and there are also plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby where you can eat and drink. It’s a pleasant place to sit after a walk on the Avenida Cristóbal Colón promenade; we spent several evenings here.

Playa Jardín Beach

Playa Jardín, to the west of the center of Puerto de la Cruz, is one of the most famous local beaches. It is surrounded by gardens designed in the 1990s by the famous Canarian artist César Manrique. Playa Jardín actually consists of a connected trio of beaches: Playa del Castillo, Playa Chica, and Playa María Jiménez, which together form one 700-meter-long black sand beach. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented here, and toilets, freshwater showers, and changing rooms are available.

During our stay, however, there were really big waves, so you couldn’t swim much. According to reviews on TripAdvisor, this isn’t such a rare occurrence. The beach closest to Punta Brava, Playa María Jiménez, is the most suitable for swimming due to its better-protected location. Recently, however, there was an issue with wastewater contamination in the sea at Playa Jardín, and swimming is currently not recommended.

Castillo de San Felipe Fortress

This colonial-style fortress from 1599 is built from volcanic stone. It is one of four fortresses that served to defend Puerto de la Cruz against pirates and enemies. Today it is a venue for exhibitions and cultural events. The fortress is listed as a UNESCO cultural heritage site. It offers a nice view of the sea. You can walk through the preserved part of the old defensive walls on which the fortress stands, and you can also see preserved old cannons.

Lago Martiánez Pool Complex

This water park, consisting of a system of saltwater lagoons, was designed in 1977 by local artist César Manrique, who used a number of architectural elements typical of the Canary Islands and local native flora. Lago is not only a set of coastal pools but also a pleasant garden and an outdoor museum of sculptures by this famous artist. It also boasts the title of National Cultural Monument – Historic Garden.

Lago Martiánez consists of three parts: the oldest San Telmo pools, the newer Los Alisios (a set of three irregularly shaped pools), and the largest pool, El Lago, which gave the whole complex its name. Four pools are intended for adults, and the remaining three with shallow water and safety features are adapted for children. You’ll find sunbeds and umbrellas included in the entrance fee, changing rooms and toilets, bars and restaurants, and since 2006, you’ll also find a casino here. All-day admission for adults is 7 euros, and for children, it’s 4 euros.

Lago Martiánez is a good option for swimming when there are big waves in the sea and you can’t swim in it, which happens often. A visit is definitely worth it; it’s a pleasant and, during our November visits to Tenerife, even half-empty water park with a unique atmosphere.

Loro Parque

Loro Parque boasts on its website that it is the best modern zoo in the world. It was founded in 1972 by Wolfgang Kiessling. Back then, it was only 13,000 m² and home to about 150 parrots; today, this zoo is 13.5 hectares and is home to 4,000 parrots. This collection of parrots is the largest in the world and significantly contributes to the research and protection of these birds on an international scale.

In the zoo, you’ll find more than 400 species of animals. You can watch performances by dolphins, orcas, sea lions, and the Loro Show, a performance by the parrots that gave Loro Parque its name. At the orca show, be careful not to sit too far forward in the so-called “splash zone,” as the orcas drench it with water during their performance. It’s good to arrive at the performances even half an hour in advance to get good seats. We liked the dolphin show the most.

The local dolphin pool is the largest in Europe. You’ll also find the world’s most extensive indoor penguin exhibit with a faithful imitation of the Antarctic environment. It was established by King Charles III of Spain, who planned to bring plants from the tropics here, let them acclimate to the Canarian climate, and then transport them to Madrid and the royal gardens of Aranjuez to get them used to the climate there. The first step of this plan was successful, the second failed. As a result, however, a rich botanical garden full of interesting plant species remained in Puerto de la Cruz. You can admire, for example, cinnamon trees, fig trees, pepper plants, coffee trees, breadfruit trees, various varieties of palms, bromeliads, aroids, and mulberries. I walked along the nicely maintained paths for several hours and there was still more to discover.

The garden is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission costs 3 euros. In the garden, you’ll find toilets and many pleasant corners to sit. You can scan a QR code at the entrance and let an audio guide lead you during your visit. You’ll learn a lot of interesting information and stories that will enhance the entire visiting experience.

Jardín Sitio Litre

Jardín Sitio Litre is one of the oldest garden complexes in Tenerife and also the oldest orchid garden in the Canary Islands. It is located at a historic 17th-century house where, in the past, people like Alexander von Humboldt or Agatha Christie stayed. Since 1774, it belonged to British families who created an English garden here. You’ll find a rich collection of orchids and other exotic plants, a century-old dragon tree, a giant araucaria, a pond with koi carp that you can feed with purchased pellets, and a peaceful atmosphere. The layout of the garden consists mainly of a network of narrow paths, complemented by ponds, a fountain, several pergolas, and a cafe with toilets. The garden is quite small; I spent an hour here, including sitting in the cafe.

Church of Our Lady of the Rock of France

This church with three naves and Mudéjar-style ceilings was built in 1684 on the site of an older chapel, with the bell tower added as late as 1898. Inside is a statue of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia, another statue of El Señor del Gran Poder de Dios from the 18th century, and also several paintings by Luis de la Cruz y Ríos and Manuel de la Cruz.

The church offers visitors beautiful architecture, decorated altars, richly carved wooden decorations, and several arched stained-glass windows. This church houses some of the most revered religious images in Tenerife, such as the image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Since 2003, the church has been a listed building. In front of the church is a pleasant area with greenery, palms, and dragon trees, complemented by a swan-shaped fountain.

Taoro City Park

Taoro Park lies on the steep slope of Taoro Hill and offers panoramic views of the city of Puerto de la Cruz. It covers an area of approximately 100,000 m² and consists of gardens, paths, viewpoints, illuminated fountains, and waterfalls. The area includes a playground, a gazebo with a restaurant, a bar, and a terrace.

The park is divided into three main parts: La Atalaya, where you’ll find the Dulce María Loynaz viewpoint, the Camino de La Sortija path popular for outdoor exercise, and the Taoro Gardens. The park also features the former Gran Hotel Taoro from 1890, which was one of the most important on the island in its time and where Agatha Christie, among others, stayed. The park is open year-round and entry is free.

If you want to save yourself the climb up the steep hill, take a taxi to the top and walk down through the gardens.

At the time of my visit, the park was beautiful and fresh green, but currently, some visitors complain that it looks neglected and unmaintained, the plants are dry, the fountains are without water, and there’s mess everywhere.

Risco Belle Aquatic Garden

The main garden is pleasant for walks and the cafe is a good place to stop and rest. You can meet a black swan here that is tame and begs for treats. Unfortunately, the water gardens were closed. Risco Belle is a hidden corner that is a bit harder to find, but it’s very pleasant here. During my visit, I had tea in the pleasant garden cafe and felt like a visitor from the days of Agatha Christie.

La Ranilla Fishing District

La Ranilla, an old fishing village with colorful small houses, is famous for its street art. In 2014, the city set out to restore local facades and at the same time offered space to various artists to present their work on the newly repaired surfaces. This entire district is thus one big open-air gallery. Many typical small houses have been transformed into bars, shops, and restaurants where you can sit and admire the surroundings. This district stretches from Plaza del Charco to Peñón del Fraile.

Mirador la Paz Viewpoint

A very nice viewpoint (mirador) is located in the eastern part of Puerto de la Cruz, in the La Paz district on the edge of the Martiánez cliffs. You can climb up here via stairs, and on each step, you’ll find the title of an Agatha Christie novel written; the Agatha Christie steps are a photogenic spot.

In the area renovated a few years ago stands a bust of the writer Agatha Christie, who stayed here in 1927 and found inspiration for some of her works. During the day, you can watch paragliders circling over the sea and hotels from the viewpoint; Martiánez Beach and Lago Martiánez with its seawater pools are also visible from here.

If you like walking, a well-maintained path leads from here along the cliff to the Hotel Semiramis, from where beautiful views ideal for photography open up. When you run out of energy, there are bars and places to eat and rest along the way. And if you don’t want to go any further, just use a taxi from the nearby stand; they are cheap and the drivers are very friendly.

Agatha Christie Street

Calle De Agatha Christie is a picturesque pedestrian street dedicated to celebrating the work of this famous detective novelist. This street, which leads from the historic Casa Cólogan towards the sea, commemorates the famous writer’s relationship with Tenerife. Each of the 117 steps is decorated with the motif of the spine of one of her books. Previously, this street was known as Paseo de los Cipreses; today it offers a colorful book walk in Puerto de la Cruz.

San Amaro

The San Amaro hermitage is the oldest religious building in Puerto de la Cruz. You’ll find it a short distance from Mirador la Paz. The hermitage dates back to 1591, is the Catholic parish church of the La Paz district, and is dedicated to Saint Amaro.

Inside you’ll find a simple but beautiful altar dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the patron saint of Puerto de la Cruz. You can also admire the painting of San Amaro, a small wooden statue of San Benito, a statue of Nuestra Señora de La Paz, and many 18th-century Mexican paintings. This hermitage was an important pilgrimage site; every year on January 15th, people headed here to participate in the festivities.

Puerto de la Cruz Lighthouse

The Puerto de la Cruz Lighthouse is an active lighthouse on the coast near the port. We visited it, but apart from the view of the football field, it’s not particularly interesting.

Monumento a la Pescadora

The Fisherwoman Monument is a bronze sculpture created in 2008 by Spanish and Basque sculptor Julio Nieto, who lives in Tenerife. The statue has a dynamic look and looks as if you’ve really caught her in the middle of walking. You can combine a visit to the museum with a visit to the excellent fish restaurant La Cofradía, which you’ll find above it.

Archaeological Museum

The museum is currently being renovated and only three rooms are open, which provide only a very limited idea of the usual form of the exhibition. It was built between 1599 and 1608 according to the design of architect Juan de Tejera. Right next to it is the Iglesia de San Francisco, the only preserved part of the original Franciscan monastery; the church itself was built in 1609 on the site of an older chapel. Don’t miss the beautiful shady area at the entrance to the temple, Plaza de Víctor Pérez.

Víctor Pérez Square

Plaza de Víctor Pérez is the smallest but also one of the most charming squares in the city. It lies in front of the San Francisco church and the San Juan chapel and was built in 1904 in honor of the physician Víctor Pérez, the main promoter of the Gran Hotel Taoro, a pioneer of local tourism, and a recognized botanist. In the middle of the square stands a fountain with a ñamera plant.

Casa Iriarte

Casa Iriarte is located at San Juan 17, on the corner of Iriarte Street, opposite Palacio Ventoso. The house was built at the end of the 18th century in traditional Canarian style, and the Iriarte brothers, prominent literary and political figures, were born here. It is one of the most representative examples of 18th-century bourgeois Canarian architecture.

Playa El Bollullo Beach

To the east of the city lies the hidden black volcanic sand beach Playa El Bollullo. You’ll find sunbeds and umbrellas, toilets, and a cafe here. A lifeguard is present on the beach. Getting here is a bit complicated; it’s easiest to go by car, although you can also reach it by a several-kilometer walk from Puerto on foot.

Puerto de la Cruz Municipal Market Flea Market

This market is open from Monday to Saturday and offers various stalls, shops, and bars, but if you visit on Wednesday or Saturday, you’ll also have the chance to explore the flea market, which takes place from morning until 2:00 PM. It’s located inside a cliff overlooking the sea, and you can eat with a beautiful view from the terrace. The studio has a kitchenette, a year-round outdoor pool is available, and Playa de Martiánez is just 200 meters away. The only complication might be the parking lot located 1.4 km from the accommodation. The price for a week’s stay at the time of writing this article is 9,330 CZK.

Another cheap accommodation option is Casa TATIANA, a highly-rated apartment with a kitchenette, outdoor pool, and terrace.
