Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, lies in the northeast of the island and often stays somewhat in the shadow of the more famous resorts. Yet, it is right here that the island shows its urban, cultural, and everyday face. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is not a classic tourist resort, but a lively port city where history blends with modern architecture, daily business hustle with a caf\u00e9 atmosphere, and local life with subtle travel discoveries. <\/p>\n\n

Santa Cruz de Tenerife offers visitors museums, galleries, or the unique Auditorio de Tenerife Ad\u00e1n Mart\u00edn building, built in a modern Spanish style. The main square is Plaza de Espa\u00f1a, and the city’s main artery is the shopping street Calle del Castillo. You can relax in a beautiful setting reminiscent of a subtropical jungle in Parque Garc\u00eda Sanabria, and the Parque Mar\u00edtimo C\u00e9sar Manrique water park invites you to swim in saltwater pools. To the northeast of the city lies the iconic golden sand beach, Las Teresitas. <\/p>\n\n

The city was founded on May 3, 1494, by Spanish Governor Alonso Fern\u00e1ndez de Lugo and soon became an important commercial port. Today, it has more than 200,000 inhabitants. It is home to the Government of the Canary Islands, making it not only the administrative but also the political and cultural heart of the archipelago. <\/p>\n\n

A grand carnival is held annually in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. After the Rio de Janeiro carnival, it is the second most famous in the world. The peak of the celebrations usually falls on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, when the streets fill with people in colorful costumes and the whole city celebrates the end of the Shrovetide period together. <\/p>\n\n

Tenerife Auditorium “Ad\u00e1n Mart\u00edn” <\/h3>\n\n
\"Auditorio<\/figure>\n\n

The Tenerife Auditorium is a concert hall building designed in a modern Spanish style by world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava. It is the most significant modern building in the Canary Islands. Its reinforced concrete rounded shell, 58 meters high, forms an impressive wave-shaped arch. When viewed from the ocean, it slightly resembles the famous Sydney Opera House. <\/p>\n\n

Construction of the auditorium began in 1997 and it opened in 2003. You’ll find two concert halls here: the main hall for 1,658 spectators, which has some of the best acoustics in the world designed by specialists from Germany, and a chamber hall for 428 spectators, as well as exhibition spaces and a caf\u00e9 with a sea view. In front of the auditorium entrance is an outdoor amphitheater for open-air performances. <\/p>\n\n

Tickets for musical performances cost from 20 to 120 euros and you can buy them on the auditorium’s official website<\/a>. You can also visit the auditorium building as part of a guided tour, which takes place Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. <\/p>\n\n

The Festival de M\u00fasica de Canarias is held here in January and February. Interestingly, the Tenerife Auditorium became the inspiration for the Tenerife logo and appeared on a Spanish postage stamp in 2008. <\/p>\n\n

Mercado Municipal Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de \u00c1frica<\/h3>\n\n
\"Mercado<\/figure>\n\n

The municipal public market is one of the places tourists visit most often in Santa Cruz. The two-story market building was designed by architect Jos\u00e9 Enrique Marrero Regalado in a neo-colonial style and resembles a scaled-down traditional Canarian village. It opened in 1944 and continues the tradition of the original 19th-century market. <\/p>\n\n

The market building was originally intended to serve only as a place to display samples of goods, but it soon began to function as the city market, known as a “recova.” Today, however, the market is far from sufficient for the city’s population. <\/p>\n\n

The market offers fresh food from the Canary Islands and around the world, specializing in fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish, but you can also buy pastries, cheeses, or typical Canarian products like ceramics or jewelry. You’ll also find restaurants, tapas bars, and caf\u00e9s here. <\/p>\n\n

Near the market, on Avenida Jos\u00e9 Manuel Guimer\u00e1 and in the adjacent streets, the Rastro de Santa Cruz flea market takes place on Sundays, where you can buy antiques, clothing, or fashion accessories.<\/p>\n\n

The market’s opening hours are Monday\u2013Saturday: 6:00 AM\u20132:00 PM, Sunday: 7:00 AM\u20132:00 PM. <\/p>\n\n

Jard\u00edn Bot\u00e1nico del Palmetum<\/h3>\n\n
\"Flower<\/figure>\n\n

The botanical garden in Santa Cruz de Tenerife covers an area of 12 hectares and specializes, as its name suggests, primarily in palms from all over the world. It boasts the largest collection of palm trees in Europe. The Palmetum Santa Cruz de Tenerife was built on the site of a former landfill that was closed in 1983. It is located on a man-made hill overlooking the ocean. Its construction began in 1995 and it opened in 2014. <\/p>\n\n

The Palmetum is the largest green space in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. You can walk along waterfalls, streams, and ponds that attract wild birds, visit the Ethnographic Museum dedicated to palms, the 2,300 m\u00b2 octagonal pavilion El Oct\u00f3gono where the most delicate species grow, and admire some 600 species of palms from islands around the world. Local plants are divided into 14 biogeographical sections, which you can comfortably walk through in an hour and a half. The gardens are maintained without the use of pesticides or fertilizers. <\/p>\n\n

There is a large free parking lot in front of the Palmetum entrance. If you’re coming by bus, get off at the Intercambiador stop. The Palmetum is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, but the entrance gate closes at 5:00 PM. Admission is 6 euros for an adult, 2.80 euros for a child, and you can buy a paper map of the botanical garden for 0.5 euros. <\/p>\n\n

Parque Mar\u00edtimo C\u00e9sar Manrique<\/h3>\n\n

Parque Mar\u00edtimo C\u00e9sar Manrique is a swimming and entertainment complex in the center of Santa Cruz, designed by architect C\u00e9sar Manrique. It covers an area of 22,000 m\u00b2 and opened in 1995. You can swim in one of three pools filled with Atlantic seawater. The complex also includes a black volcanic sand beach. The park offers views of the Tenerife Auditorium, the Palmetum botanical garden, and the sea. <\/p>\n\n

The complex works sensitively with natural elements such as volcanic stones, palms, ornamental flowers, and saltwater waterfalls. The entire atmosphere is then completed by C\u00e9sar Manrique’s unmistakable wind sculptures, which give the place its typical signature. <\/p>\n\n

You’ll find sun loungers, umbrellas, changing rooms, showers, a gym, restaurants, and bars here. However, some visitors complain about the prices and food quality. Admission is 7.50 euros for an adult and 4 euros for a child under 12. Sun loungers and umbrellas are paid for separately. The swimming area is accessible for people with reduced mobility. In summer it is open from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and in winter from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. During winter months, some pools may be closed. <\/p>\n\n

Museo de las Ilusiones Tenerife<\/h3>\n\n

Physics and art merge at the Museum of Illusions in Santa Cruz in an original combination of optical illusions, art installations, and scientific inventions. The museum is housed in a historic tobacco factory from 1928 covering more than 700 m\u00b2 and presents optical illusions across the centuries, from 19th-century zoetropes to modern video installations. During the tour, visitors immerse themselves in various interactive activities, such as drawing with light or creating shadows, and also get a glimpse into the fascinating world of upside down. <\/p>\n\n

The Museum of Illusions is also an educational center. It invites visitors to discover the fascinating science behind each illusion and offers a deeper understanding of how our brain perceives reality. Guides are stationed throughout the museum, ready to explain individual exhibits and happy to take photos or videos of you for free. <\/p>\n\n

The museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and on weekends from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The recommended tour time is roughly 1-2 hours. A ticket costs 17 euros for an adult, 5 euros for a child under 6, and 13 euros for those over 6. For parents with children, a family ticket for 49 euros is worth it. The museum is located just a short walk from the Mercado de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de \u00c1frica, so you can easily combine a visit to these two attractions. <\/p>\n\n

Museo Hist\u00f3rico Militar de Canarias<\/h3>\n\n

The Military History Museum is located in the former 19th-century Almeyda Fortress and deals with the history of defense in the Canary Islands and the main events, figures, and military equipment that shaped the islands’ development from the 16th to the 20th century. <\/p>\n\n

The museum opened to the public in 1988. The fortress housing the museum was part of the city’s coastal defense system and offers authentic fortification elements such as walls, embrasures, and underground passages integrated into the exhibition. You’ll also find many interactive exhibits here. <\/p>\n\n

On the upper floor, you’ll find a chronological overview of the military history of the Canary Islands; on the ground floor are collections of military objects, from weapons and medals to technical equipment, maps, models, and artworks. In the areas around the fortress, you can admire historical vehicles. The recommended visit time is 1-2 hours. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and during weekends and holidays from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM; entry is free. <\/p>\n\n

Plaza de Espa\u00f1a<\/h3>\n\n
\"Plaza<\/figure>\n\n

Plaza de Espa\u00f1a is the heart of Santa Cruz and, at 5,026 m\u00b2, the largest square in the Canary Islands. It was created in 1929 on the site of the former Castillo de San Crist\u00f3bal fortress, which served to defend the island against pirate raids. Today, preserved parts of the original structure’s walls can be seen in an underground tunnel beneath the square. In 2006, the square underwent an extensive reconstruction designed by the Swiss architectural studio Herzog & de Meuron. For example, three pavilions with rich and varied vegetation were created, including Australian banyans, Indian laurels, jacarandas, and various types of palms. <\/p>\n\n

You’ll find Plaza de Espa\u00f1a in the center of Santa Cruz, approximately 1.4 km north of the Auditorio de Tenerife. In the middle of the square, you can relax by an artificial saltwater lake with a fountain shooting up to 30 meters high, and admire the Monumento a los Ca\u00eddos, a monument dedicated to the victims of the Spanish Civil War. At the north end of the square, you’ll find a large “Santa Cruz” sign that lights up in different colors on special occasions and has become a popular spot for photos. <\/p>\n\n

Calle del Castillo<\/h3>\n\n
\"Calle<\/figure>\n\n

Calle del Castillo is one of the main pedestrian and shopping arteries of historic Santa Cruz. You can buy goods from world-famous fashion brands as well as souvenirs in small local shops, sit in a restaurant, or have a beer in one of the bars. The street is named after the Castillo de San Crist\u00f3bal fortress, which was located nearby. <\/p>\n\n

Calle del Castillo connects the northern Plaza Weyler with Plaza de Candelaria and Plaza de Espa\u00f1a to the south. You can admire houses in all sorts of architectural styles here, from neoclassical to modern buildings. The street is entirely pedestrian, ideal for a relaxed stroll. Walk it from Plaza Weyler down to Plaza de Espa\u00f1a. <\/p>\n\n

Palacio de la Carta<\/h3>\n\n

At the end of one of Santa Cruz’s busiest and most commercial streets, Calle del Castillo, stands a building made of lava stone with elements of Canarian Baroque and Neoclassicism, the Palacio de la Carta. This house is considered an interesting and well-preserved example of an 18th-century Canarian urban residence. Its interior and beautiful inner courtyard are accessible for free. <\/p>\n\n

The house originally belonged to the Guerra family estate, but in 1726 it was acquired by Captain Mat\u00edas Rodr\u00edguez Carta, after whom it is named today. Since 1976, it has been owned by the Tenerife Island Council and on January 24, 1987, it opened as an ethnographic museum. <\/p>\n\n

Throughout its history, it has seen many owners and residents. Important figures, bishops, and captains general stayed here, and literary meetings known as Tertulias de Nava were also held here. The house was also inhabited by tenant families from the Valle de Guerra area, who still remember it in connection with their childhood. The building itself and its surroundings were declared a cultural monument on January 27, 2006. Today, it houses a tourist information center. <\/p>\n\n

Castillo de San Crist\u00f3bal<\/h3>\n\n

This historic 16th-century fortress was the first major fortress on the island of Tenerife and played the most important role in the defense of Santa Cruz. It had a square plan with bastions at the corners and stood on a rocky outcrop in Bias D\u00edaz Bay. The fortress was demolished in 1928 to make way for today’s Plaza de Espa\u00f1a. Its remains were hidden underground for a long time and emerged only during the square’s reconstruction. Today you can see them in an underground gallery, which also houses a small museum. For example, you can see the famous El Tigre cannon, cast in the 18th century in Seville. According to legend, this was the weapon that wounded Admiral Nelson during the Battle of Santa Cruz and led to the amputation of his right arm. <\/p>\n\n

C\u00edrculo de Bellas Artes de Tenerife<\/h3>\n\n

Founded in 1925, the C\u00edrculo de Bellas Artes de Tenerife is one of the oldest private cultural centers in Spain. You can find it at Calle Castillo 43. The cultural center is dedicated to many disciplines, from visual arts and literature to science, philosophy, theater, film, and performing arts. Across three floors, you’ll find numerous exhibitions, primarily photography and various sculptures. Interesting free exhibitions by local contemporary artists are held here. You can get refreshments at a small bar serving Madrid cuisine. <\/p>\n\n

Rambla de Santa Cruz<\/h3>\n\n

Rambla de Santa Cruz is one of the city’s main traffic arteries. Its construction was ordered in 1661 by Ger\u00f3nimo de Benavente y Qui\u00f1ones so he could show off his brand-new horse-drawn carriage, the first to appear on Tenerife. <\/p>\n\n

The promenade is lined with numerous sculptures by artists from the 1970s. The most beautiful section is located between Plaza de Toros and Parque Garc\u00eda Sanabria. Rambla de Santa Cruz was created through gradual modifications in the last third of the 19th century. However, it only gained a more cohesive look between 1910 and 1913, when grand bourgeois villas were built around Plaza de Toros. <\/p>\n\n

Museo de Naturaleza y Arqueolog\u00eda<\/h3>\n\n

The Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located in the building of the former civil hospital in the island’s capital, which is an interesting example of Canarian neoclassical architecture.<\/p>\n\n

The museum offers a unique look at the natural wealth of the Canary Islands, from taxidermy animals and birds to a rich collection of insects with beautiful colorful butterflies, fossils, and interesting minerals. It also features the largest existing collection dedicated to the Guanche culture, the original inhabitants of Tenerife who lived on the island long before the arrival of Spanish conquerors. You can even see Guanche mummies here. <\/p>\n\n

Not all descriptions are translated into English; an English audio guide is available, but some visitors complain that it is too brief. The museum is open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM, and Sundays and holidays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entry is free on Saturdays after 4:00 PM. <\/p>\n\n

Centro Comercial Meridiano<\/h3>\n\n

The Meridiano shopping center opened on June 17, 2003, and offers 85 stores with fashion clothing, cosmetics, footwear, accessories, and other goods. You’ll also find restaurants, caf\u00e9s and bars, a multiplex cinema, game rooms, and relaxation areas. Thanks to its location near the center and good accessibility, Meridiano is popular with both locals and tourists who want to enjoy a day of shopping or take a break from sightseeing. It can be quite crowded on weekends. <\/p>\n\n

TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes<\/h3>\n\n

Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) is an art center designed by the Swiss studio Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with Tenerife architect Virgilio Guti\u00e9rrez. The 20,622 m\u00b2 building combines a contemporary art gallery, a photography center, and a public library. You’ll also find several offices, a caf\u00e9, and a public square in front of the building. <\/p>\n\n

The architecture of TEA is striking: sloping ramps, diagonal lines, and interlocking glass walls connect the individual levels, and more than 1,200 irregular glass surfaces give the building dynamism from both inside and out. Inside, you’ll find exhibitions by international artists as well as an extensive collection of works by surrealist \u00d3scar Dom\u00ednguez, a Tenerife native. Concerts and performances are also held here. <\/p>\n\n

In 2023, the sculpture Carla, representing a woman’s head with closed eyes, was placed in the square in front of the building. The cast-iron statue by Barcelona sculptor Jaume Plensa is seven meters high and weighs 7.8 tons. <\/p>\n\n

Iglesia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora de la Concepci\u00f3n<\/h3>\n\n

The Church of the Immaculate Conception is one of the oldest churches in Santa Cruz. Its construction began in 1499, shortly after the conquest of the island, near the spot where the first documented Christian mass on the island of Tenerife was held after the city’s founding. <\/p>\n\n

Architecturally, the church is exceptional for its combination of Canarian Baroque with Tuscan elements. It is particularly striking for its traditional Mud\u00e9jar-style coffered ceilings, inspired by Islamic architecture, and its prominent bell tower, which is one of Santa Cruz’s landmarks. The floor plan of the building is also quite extraordinary, as it is the <\/strong>only five-aisled church in the Canary Islands, making it unique not only within the city but the entire archipelago. The church burned down in the 17th century and was subsequently restored. Entry is free. <\/p>\n\n

Iglesia de San Francisco de As\u00eds<\/h3>\n\n

The Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi is the second most important church in the city after the Church of the Immaculate Conception. It was completed in 1680 and, with its three aisles, is one of the best examples of Canarian Baroque. It has an 18th-century Andalusian-style central altar. It originally served as the temple of a now-defunct Franciscan monastery. <\/p>\n\n

The church is known primarily for a small Ecuadorian sculpture made of corn paste depicting Jesus Christ, Se\u00f1or de las Tribulaciones, which is attributed with miraculous powers. During the cholera epidemic of 1893, this statue was carried in procession through the streets and the epidemic miraculously stopped. Since then, it has been considered the protector of Santa Cruz and is also nicknamed Se\u00f1or de Santa Cruz. <\/p>\n\n

Estadio Heliodoro Rodr\u00edguez L\u00f3pez<\/h3>\n\n

The Heliodoro Rodr\u00edguez L\u00f3pez Stadium was inaugurated on July 25, 1925, following the founding of the CD Tenerife football club, with a match between this club and Marino from Las Palmas. The stadium was designed by architects Jos\u00e9 Enrique Marrero Regalado and Carlos Schwartz. It originally held 7,000 spectators, but renovations in 2000, which aimed to bring it closer to Barcelona’s Mini Estadi, expanded it. They preserved historical elements like the original entrance gate. Today, the stadium has a capacity of 22,800 seats, making it one of the largest in Spain. It is also the second-largest stadium in the Canary Islands. Tours are available in Spanish and English. <\/p>\n\n

Casa Del Carnaval<\/h3>\n\n

Casa Del Carnaval allows you to experience the atmosphere of the famous local carnival throughout the year. It opened in 2017 and within its 1,050 m\u00b2 you’ll find a permanent exhibition with costumes and unique items related to the carnival, a multipurpose hall for temporary exhibitions, the Sala Suspi for temporary exhibitions and cultural events, and a documentation center focused on the history of the carnival for professionals. <\/p>\n\n

Numerous interactive and digital elements elevate the tour to a new kind of experience. Thanks to audiovisual screens, video walls, digital applications, and audio guides in English and Spanish, visitors literally immerse themselves in the carnival atmosphere. You can even try on carnival costumes here. <\/p>\n\n

It is the only place in the Canary Islands with International Tourist Interest status. Casa Del Carnaval is located in the Barranco de Santos valley, near the Puente Galcer\u00e1n bridge. It is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM and entry is free. <\/p>\n\n

Museo de Bellas Artes<\/h3>\n\n

The museum building, built in 1929 in a neoclassical style by architect Eladio Laredo, has fourteen rooms containing paintings from the 16th to the 20th century. The first items stored here were flags captured in 1797 during the battle against Nelson. In 1840, the city council agreed to build crates to store the flags, and this initiative gave rise to today’s museum. Originally, its art collections were on display in the town hall’s meeting room. The current museum building was renovated in 1933. <\/p>\n\n

Today you can see perhaps the museum’s most significant exhibit, the Nava and Grim\u00f3n triptych by Flemish painter Pieter Coecke, as well as The Expulsion of the Moneychangers from the Temple and Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem by Canarian painter Juan de Miranda, the Baroque Immaculate Conception by Gaspar Afonso de Quevedo, Portrait of Queen Isabella II by Federico de Madrazo, Portrait of Fernando Visca\u00ed by Joaqu\u00edn Sorolla, or works on loan from the Prado Museum in Madrid, Orpheus by Pieter Brueghel and Defense of the Santa Engracia Monastery by Nicol\u00e1s Meg\u00eda M\u00e1rquez. It also exhibits works by Canarian painters such as Gaspar de Quevedo, Crist\u00f3bal Hern\u00e1ndez de Quintana, and Gonz\u00e1lez M\u00e9ndez. You can walk through the museum as part of a guided tour. Entry is free. <\/p>\n\n

Castillo de San Juan Bautista (Castillo Negro)<\/h3>\n\n

The St. John the Baptist fortress with its circular plan is also commonly known as the Black Castle, though it’s uncertain whether it owes this to the black volcanic stone it’s built from or its location in Caleta de Negros. The best-preserved fortress on the island <\/p>\n\n

was built in the 17th century and since then was the second most important fortress for the defense of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, tasked with defending its port. Since 1948, the fortress, surrounded by a moat, also served as a military museum. Today, however, it is unfortunately not open to the public. You can at least view it from the outside. The fortress is listed as a Spanish cultural monument. <\/p>\n\n

Teatro Guimer\u00e1<\/h3>\n\n

The 19th-century Teatro Guimer\u00e1 is a historic theater in the center of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is the oldest theater in the Canary Islands. In 1923, it was named after local native writer, poet, and playwright \u00c0ngel Guimer\u00e0. <\/p>\n\n

The classicist-romantic building was designed by architect Manuel de Or\u00e1a. The theater was built on the site of the former St. Dominic monastery, which was closed during the confiscation of church property. Construction began in 1848, and although the theater was inaugurated as early as 1851 during the reign of Isabella II, work on it continued for another twenty years. The most significant renovations include modifications made in 1911 by Antonio Pintor, when the orchestra pit was built and the roof replaced, and subsequent modernization at the end of the 20th century under the direction of Pedro Schwartz.<\/p>\n\n

The theater played a key role in the city’s cultural life, primarily as an opera house. The first opera, Verdi’s Ernani, was performed here as early as 1861. Large opera and symphonic productions have since moved to the modern Auditorio de Tenerife. Today, it mainly hosts theatrical performances, concerts, and cultural events. Currently, the theater is undergoing a comprehensive renovation, which has required its closure for several years. <\/p>\n\n

El Tanque Espacio Cultural<\/h3>\n\n

This circular exhibition center is dedicated to contemporary audiovisual art, especially works by local artists and avant-garde creations. You’ll find it in the Cabo Llanos area, on the former site of an old oil refinery, specifically one of its storage tanks, which gave this space its name. <\/p>\n\n

In 1997, this tank was transformed into the El Tanque cultural space according to a design by architect Fernando Menis. During the conversion, he drew on the tank’s original structure and preserved its industrial character, using recycled materials from the dismantled refinery. <\/p>\n\n

El Tanque is not a traditional exhibition hall, but a place for multimedia installations where the space itself is an active element of the artistic concept. The exceptional acoustics of the former tank are worth noting. With a reverberation lasting 17 seconds, it creates an extraordinary environment for musical and sound creation. Plaza del Pr\u00edncipe de Asturias<\/h3>\n\n

This square is located in the very heart of Santa Cruz and is considered the city’s most grand square and one of the most iconic in Tenerife. Until the end of the 19th century, it served as the garden of the Franciscan monastery. At its entrance, you can admire two statues from Genoa symbolizing spring and summer, and in the middle, you’ll find an elegant octagonal gazebo. You’ll also find plenty of benches to sit on. The square’s greatest charm comes from the crowns of spreading fig trees that shroud almost the entire area in shade. This is also why it is ranked among the most romantic squares in Spain. <\/p>\n\n

Parroquia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Pilar<\/h3>\n\n

The Parroquia de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Pilar church is located on the site of a former hermitage dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is built in the style of typical Canarian religious architecture with a wooden ceiling and a main altar. It boasts a beautiful interior in a relatively modern 20th-century design. <\/p>\n\n

The church stands on Calle del Pilar, in a lively part of town full of shops and restaurants, and is easily accessible while walking through the center. The complex also includes a small museum of sacred art, which can be viewed for a symbolic entrance fee, with descriptions also in English. <\/p>\n\n

Trips from Santa Cruz de Tenerife<\/h2>\n\n

Playa de Las Teresitas<\/h3>\n\n
\"Playa<\/figure>\n\n

About 7 km northeast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, near the village of San Andr\u00e9s, you’ll find the golden sand beach Playa de Las Teresitas. The beach is 1.6 km long, about 80 meters wide, and differs from other beaches in northern Tenerife precisely because of the golden sand imported from the Sahara. It was artificially created to increase tourist interest in the northern part of the island. <\/p>\n\n

Today it is among the most visited beaches in the Canary Islands. Due to high visitor numbers, the sand had to be replenished in 1998. The beach has breakwaters that protect swimmers from waves and dangerous sea currents, making it ideal for families with children or non-swimmers. <\/p>\n\n

There are many palms providing shade, you can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, and you’ll also find changing rooms, toilets, and lockers. You can get refreshments at one of the nearby restaurants or bars. There is a spacious free parking lot near the beach. You can also get here from Santa Cruz by bus number 910. <\/p>\n\n

Mirador Las Teresitas<\/h3>\n\n

From the viewpoint, which you can easily reach by car or bus number 945, there is a beautiful view of Las Teresitas beach, the village of San Andr\u00e9s, Santa Cruz, and the Anaga Mountains. You can take stunning photos here during sunrise. The viewpoint lies at an altitude of about 100 meters on a hill directly above Las Teresitas beach. There is a small free parking lot at the viewpoint. <\/p>\n\n

Parque Rural de Anaga – Sendero El Bosque Encantado, Sendero de los Sentidos<\/h3>\n\n
\"Enchanted<\/figure>\n\n

Venture deep into the mysterious Anaga Mountains with their dense laurel and cloud forests. Since 2015, the Anaga Mountains have been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Take a walk among the lush greenery and enjoy views of northern Tenerife’s villages from a height of a thousand meters above sea level. You can take, for example, the Trail of the Senses<\/a> from Cruz del Carmen, which is accessible for people with reduced mobility, or the Enchanted Forest Trail<\/a>, for which a reservation is needed in advance as only 100 people are allowed in daily. Don’t forget to bring warm clothes and good shoes\u2014it’s cooler in the Anaga mountains than on the coast, and it often rains. This is also why the mountains are so lush and green. <\/p>\n\n

Teide National Park and Pico del Teide<\/h3>\n\n
\"Mount<\/figure>\n\n

Teide National Park in central Tenerife offers a look at interesting geological and especially volcanic phenomena. You can observe the famous “lunar landscape” and various bizarre rock formations here. You’ll also find several volcanoes, the highest and most famous being Pico del Teide at 3,715 meters. You can even head to its summit, but you must book entry well in advance. Also interesting are the Los Roques de Garc\u00eda rock formations, from which a breathtaking view of the Llano de Ucanca plain opens up. <\/p>\n\n

Most of the park lies at an altitude above 2,000 meters. Yet you’ll find many animals and plants here, including endemic species. In total, you’ll find 14 plant endemics that you can’t see anywhere else in the world. Eucalyptus forest grows at lower elevations, while Canarian pines and Atlas cedar greet you at higher ones. <\/p>\n\n

Two information centers and an extensive network of signs will help you navigate the park. Note\u2014it is forbidden to move off marked trails or to camp here. <\/p>\n\n

Thanks to very low light pollution, the park offers exceptional conditions for night sky observation and scientific research, which led to the construction of an astrophysical observatory at 2,400 m above sea level, equipped with meteorological and solar telescopes. <\/p>\n\n

The park was established in 1954 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. At 20,000 hectares, it is among Spain’s largest natural parks. It is also the most visited natural park in all of Europe. <\/p>\n\n

Playa de las Gaviotas<\/h3>\n\n

Visit a small hidden black sand beach located just a few kilometers from Santa Cruz. Its name translates to Seagull Beach. You won’t find sun loungers, umbrellas, showers, or toilets here, but you will find beautiful peace and privacy. The beach faces east, and you can watch magnificent sunrises from here. Surfers will also enjoy it as there are relatively large waves. Lifeguards take care of safety here. But don’t be surprised that roughly a third of the beach is reserved for nudists. Dogs are also welcome here. You’ll find only a few people in the morning; it can be busier in the afternoon, but still less than at nearby Playa Las Teresitas. You can get here by car (though parking isn’t great, especially on weekends) or by bus to the Igueste stop and then a short walk. <\/p>\n\n

Museo de La Ciencia y El Cosmos in La Laguna<\/h3>\n\n

The Museum of Science and the Cosmos in San Crist\u00f3bal de La Laguna offers a unique combination of a traditional museum and an amusement park. You can discover the laws of nature in their full breadth here, from your own body to the distant universe. Interactive exhibits will guide you through the mysteries of the universe, and the planetarium will reveal a breathtaking view of the starry sky. The museum offers a cross-section of all scientific fields with a special focus on astronomy. <\/p>\n\n

It’s an ideal stop for families with children, who can play while learning. Scientific phenomena are presented in an interesting and fun way so that children can better understand them. You can easily park for free here. From Santa Cruz, you can get here by car in 15\u201320 minutes, but you can also use the direct tram that connects Santa Cruz with La Laguna, and the ride takes about 25\u201330 minutes. <\/p>\n\n

Ecomuseo de El Tanque<\/h3>\n\n

The El Tanque Ecomuseum invites you on a walk through time back centuries. In nine themed rooms, it will guide you through everyday life in Partido de Abajo, the former name of this area, from the settlement’s origins through historical context to what animals were kept and what crops were grown here. <\/p>\n\n

The museum uses virtual reality elements, audiovisual exhibits, and practical aids. Visitors can learn what cereals were grown in the settlement, what objects were used, what the traditional market was like, and even experience the threshing process through virtual reality as if they were leading the cattle themselves. <\/p>\n\n
